The UN Secretariat is launching a call for nominations to enlarge the pool of potential candidates for positions of Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG) Political and/or for the Rule of Law in United Nations field missions. These are Heads and deputy Heads of mission positions.
Who can nominate?
Member States: may submit a parity list of up to four nominees (e.g. if submission of two nominees, one must be a woman; if a list of four is submitted, at least two women must be nominated).
Organizations: (UN entities, international and regional organizations, NGOs…) may also put forward candidates. The parity consideration pertaining to Member States applies.
Self-nominations: candidates who meet the profile and criteria outlined below are entitled to nominate themselves.
What profile are we looking for?
Candidates are required to have:
- A minimum of 20 years of proven high level governmental, non-governmental, international and/or regional experience in conflict, post-conflict, peacebuilding and/or development;
- Strong leadership and managerial skills;
- A high degree of emotional intelligence and political acumen;
- Excellent communication skills;
- The ability to build consensus amongst stakeholders and coordinate the work of complex multicultural and multidisciplinary field missions;
- Impeccable personal integrity and respect for human rights;
- Demonstrated cultural and gender sensitivity;
- Fluency in English. Given the areas of deployment of UN field missions, nominations of French and Arabic speaking candidates are encouraged.
Nominations of women candidates are strongly encouraged.
How to apply?
Nominations must include a curriculum vitae and a personal vision statement and be submitted online at leadershipcall.unmissions.org, no later than 1 May 2017.
The vision statement should be limited to 500 words and address the nominee’s vision on what constitutes effective and good leadership in UN peace operations. It should also highlight the nominee’s motivation to serve in a UN field leadership role.

Nominations received will be reviewed and stored in a database provided they meet the minimum requirements for the generic positions as listed above. Inclusion into the database does not guarantee that nominees will be considered for a particular position. This call for nominations is an outreach activity; it is not linked to a particular vacancy in the field nor does it entail a rostering exercise. Nominees will only be contacted if/when a particular vacancy matches their profile. Shortlisting for specific positions -- as and when a vacancy arises -- will draw from the generic pool and supplement the Secretariat’s own search and consultations. Candidates found suitable for a specific vacancy may be invited to participate in a competitive assessment process.
Human rights screening: Individuals who are either nominated by Member States or who seek to serve with the United Nations in any individual capacity will be required, if short-listed for a specific position, to complete a self-attestation stating that they have not committed, been convicted of, nor prosecuted for, any criminal offence and have not been involved, by act or omission, in the commission of any violation of international human rights law or international humanitarian law.
Conflicts of interest: Individuals short-listed for a specific position will also be required to complete the pre-appointment declaration of interests for senior positions to identify and manage possible conflicts of interest that may arise should the individual be appointed to a D/SRSG position.
